The annual ranking of the top 50 American Philanthropists

The overall giving of the top 50 philanthropists in 2016 decreased. Total donations amounted to $5.6 billion, in comparison to 7$ in 2015 and $10.2 in 2014. Phil Knight, Nike co-founder, leads the ranking

The Chronicle of Philanthropy published the 17th annual ranking of the top American philanthropists, which included giving veterans – as Bill e Melinda Gates – but also “newcomers” as Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings.

Among the most interesting insights:

  • The tech sector dominates, with four representatives in the top ten.  Nine people from the overall ranking belong to the tech sector and donated in total over $1.2 billion (more than 20% of the Philanthropy 50 giving).
  • Philanthropy 50 donors allocated over  $328 million through donor-advised funds, more than double in comparison to 2015. Among those using these vehicles we find the aforementioned Reed Hastings and Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs.
  • College and universities received over half of the total 2016 donations.
